We are entering into the final phase of the 2016/17 conservation project on RRS Discovery’s masts and rigging. Riggers and cranes have taken over the ship and the quayside in order to reinstate the masts and rigging which were taken away to Gloucester for a complete refurbishment.
The work involved in this massive project is extremely specialised and Tommi Neilson’s company who took the rig down, refurbished it and are currently reinstating it are experts in the conservation and preservation of historical ships,
As this work takes place at high level and involves cranes to reinstate the enormous masts, the ship and the quayside have been closed during this period to ensure public safety. The museum, galleries, café and shop remain open and we have reduced the admission price by 50% during this period for visitors.
The ship will be reopened at the end of the month in time for the Summer season in all her glory, so it’s definitely worth planning a trip to Discovery Point during the holidays!!!
